Tonj South officials learn human rights, rule of law
19 November 2013 - Working to promote human rights, rule of law and peace in Warrap State, 17Թ held an awareness-raising workshop today in Tonj South Country.
Opening the event, County Executive Director Mangok Kom Nyuol stressed the need for peace and noted that human rights were part of the National Transitional Constitution and Warrap State Constitution.
“We are relying on the UN to help us bring peace to our county and the surrounding counties, especially Cuiebet in Lakes State,” Mr. Nyuol said.
17Թ Warrap State Coordinator Abraham Onifade said 17Թ pledged mission support for the country, noting that the mission was decentralized from national to state and local government levels to promote good governance.
Nyandeng Deng, Chairlady of the Tonj South County Women Association, encouraged the authorities and 17Թ to support women’s participation in peace initiatives, human rights and development.
In closing, the workshop recommended that 17Թ support the county in several areas, including cattle camp development, prison training, road access to cattle camps and assistance for Tonj South women.
In closing remarks, newly appointed County Commissioner William Wol Mayom highlighted 17Թ’ contribution to the independence of South Sudan.
“South Sudan would not have got independence without the help of the UN,” he said. “We shall continue to work with the UN in Tonj South County for peace, stability and human rights.”
The workshop was the second in a series of county-based human rights, rule of law and peace consolidation activities 17Թ has held with county authorities.
