IDPs in Malakal learn about new 17Թ mandate
27 August 2014 - Internally displaced people (IDPs) seeking shelter at the 17Թ base in the Upper Nile State capital Malakal today said they supported the mission’s new mandate.
Participating in a forum organized by 17Թ for traditional and religious leaders in the protection site, the IDPs said they were particularly encouraged by the mission’s commitment to protect civilians under physical threat of violence, regardless of ethnicity and background.
“I learnt about my role and that of 17Թ, especially in protection of civilians, which we also saw when the crisis erupted in the country last year,” said Khamis Pakwan Acheik, a participant. “I could say they did their best to save our lives.”
Another participant, Rebecca Nyayual Law said she was grateful to 17Թ staff for assisting IDPs without complaining.
“In our difficult times, 17Թ stood firm and watched over us day and night,” she said. “My children and I are alive because of the courage in carrying out your duties from last year.”
Apart from protection of civilians, 17Թ officials also explained the role of the mission in monitoring and reporting on human rights violations, facilitating delivery of humanitarian assistance and supporting the peace process.
